Film Production company logo

For this logo I decided to make it dark with little colours to appeal to the angsty teenage crowd. I also turned the helmet visor into a pattern/layout for the title, this adds a sharpness and a coolness to the logo which will help sell the company. the different type of fonts is to differentiate the name of the company from the company itself. this also helps the name of the production company stand out. I also decided to make it simple and symmetrical so it looks neat and more organised while appealing to an edgy teenage crowd. I named it Knight after my last name, so not only do people know who made it, but it will also be very catchy and simple.

OTHER PLANNING

TITLE:

JOE! Or the greatest loser in all of Longsands Academy

I wanted something that would stick, but I didn’t want it to be clichéd or conventional. So I named the movie after the protagonist and just added a lengthy subheading. This will hopefully draw the audience in as it is like nothing anyone has seen before. The adding of the “!” I thought would attract the younger crowd as it is more loud and aggressive, the young teenage crowd like that. I thought the subheading would be relatable as every teenager feels like a complete loser at some point. Then it mentions a school, which connotes the location and the age of the audience the film is aimed at. Also the fact that the character’s name is very ordinary can help relate with the audience as it’s not a super duper warrior name, it’s simply “joe”.

FONT:

The font will be a rough font, one that looks cracked or broken. This would be to symbolise how unpolished Joe is and how broken his social life is.  It would be san serif because it looks less fancy, and our hero is certainly not a posh character.

SETTING:

The setting for the movie would include a street, a school, a park and his bedroom. This is to create a normal down to earth setting that teenagers can relate to, all the while creating the uncomfortable and surreal atmosphere with the dramatized lighting (dark for school and light for outside of school) but with the 4th wall breaking going on. The lighting scheme is like this to signify that school is not a fun place and outside of school is where the characters are free.

MUSIC:

The music will mainly be electronic pop rock to try and connect with the audience and appeal to the mainstream market of that audience.  They will however not be popular songs to avoid copyright issues. That way my video can still remain up on youtube.

UNIQUE SELLING POINT:

This will be a 4th wall breaking movie.  This style of comedy will hopefully sell the movie after the recent success of films like Deadpool, which many teenagers enjoyed. This will make the film appeal to the audience while still keeping different from the other teen angst films.

Character Plan

CHARACTERS:

JOE-A 16-18 YEAR OLD BOY WHO IS THE MOST UNPOPULAR KID IN SCHOOL. HE IS ALSO THE NARRATOR OF THE MOVIE, WHICH ALLOWS FOR DEEP TALKING TO YOURSELF THEMES AND COMEDIC 4TH WALL BREAKING. HE WEARS OLD CLOTHES THAT ARE IN NO WAY FASHIONABLE. HE IS SOCIALLY AWKWARD AND SHY. THIS WAS MAINLY INSPIRED BY CHARACTERS LIKE SCOTT PILGRIM (SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD) AND GARTH ALGAR (WAYNE'S WORLD), WHO ARE BOTH VERY SOCIALLY AWKWARD AND NOT VERY POPULAR COMPARED TO THEIR FRIENDS.

ERIN-A 16-18 YEAR OLD GIRL WHO IS AN EDGY PUNK GIRL. SHE IS THE CHILDHOOD FRIEND OF JOE. SHE HATES EVERYTHING AND IS VERY GRUMPY. SHE WEARS A LOT OF EMO/GOTH MAKE UP AND MUSIC RELATED CLOTHES. SHE WAS MAINLY INSPIRED BY JANIS IAN (MEAN GIRLS) WHO DRESSES IN A LOT OF BLACK AND HATES A LOT OF COOL STUFF LIKE THE COOL KIDS AND MAINSTREAM MUSIC.

SIMON-A 16-18 YEAR OLD BOY WHO IS OBSESSED WITH MEMES AND THE INTERNET. HE IS THE OTHER BEST FRIEND TO JOE. HE IS ALSO SOCIALLY AWKWARD AND SHY BUT IS MORE DISTINGUISHED BY HIS LOVE FOR JOKES. HE IS THE FUNNY ONE. HE WEARS A LOT OF NERDY/HIPSTER CLOTHES WITH LOGOS AND INTERNET JOKES ON THEM. HIM AND ERIN DON’T GET ON. HE WASN'T INSPIRED BY A SPECIFIC FILM CHARACTER, BUT FROM WHOM I'D IMAGINE WOULD BE THE KIND OF KIDS THAT GO ON THE INTERNET A LOT AND WATCH MAINLY MEMES FOR ENTERTAINMENT.

EUGENE-A 16-18 YEAR OLD BOY WHO IS JOE’S ARCH NEMESIS. HE ACTS LIKE THEY’RE POLAR OPPOSITE WHEN REALLY THEY’RE THE SAME PERSON. HE TOO WEARS UNCOOL CLOTHES. HE IS ALSO SOCIALLY AWKWARD BUT IS MORE AGGRESSIVE AND SELF CENTERED. HE WAS MAINLY INSPIRED BY MANY HIGH SCHOOL BULLIES IN FILMS LIKE HENRY BOWERS (IT), KENNY (LET ME IN) AND REGINA GEORGE (MEAN GIRLS), WHO ARE MAINLY BULLIES TO EVERYONE BUT ARE INSECURE ABOUT SOMETHING PERSONAL. WITH EUGENE, IT'S HIS NAME.

JOSH-A 16-18 YEAR OLD BOY WHO IS EUGENE’S BEST FRIEND. HE IS EXACTLY LIKE SIMON FOR COMEDIC EFFECT. HE TOO WAS INSPIRED BY HOW I'D IMAGINE THE INTERNET AUDIENCE TO LOOK AND SOUND LIKE.

GRETCHEN-A 16-18 YEAR OLD GIRL WHO IS EUGENE’S OTHER BEST FRIEND. SHE IS EXACTLY LIKE ERIN FOR COMEDIC REASONS. SHE TOO WAS INSPIRED BY CHARACTERS LIKE JANIS WHO HATE EVERYTHING AND WEAR MAINLY BLACK.

EVANGELINE-A 16-18 YEAR OLD GIRL WHO IS JOE’S CRUSH. SHE IS WAY OUT OF JOE’S LEAGUE BEING EXTREMELY BEAUTIFUL. SHE WEARS LOTS OF MAKE UP AND FANCY CLOTHES. SHE DOESN’T LIKE JOE THAT MUCH. SHE WAS INSPIRED BY CHARACTERS LIKE RAMONA FLOWERS (SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD) AND THE PLASTICS FROM MEAN GIRLS, WHO HAVE MEN DYING AT THEIR FEET, BUT THEY ARE QUITE BITTER AND HARSH AND ON THE OUTSIDE, COULDN'T REALLY CARE LESS ABOUT THE GUYS WHO WORSHIP THEM.

JOE SCRIPT

                                                                          JOE  SCRIPT

SCENE 1: EXT, DAY, JOE IS SITTING ON BENCH IN PARK.

JOE (a socially awkward child) is sitting on a bench in the park. He looks zoned out. He looks to the camera.

JOE: What? (pause, looks off screen) Wait, we’re filming now? (looks at camera) Um, I don’t really have anything to say right now, so uh (pause, points off screen), look! Over there!

Camera turns around to look at nothing. Camera turns back to Joe only to find he ran off.

Cut to Joe in bed. He is getting out of bed, puts his clothes on and gets everything together for school. While that’s happening we can hear a narration by Joe himself.

JOE (narrator): Let me start over. My name is Joe. I am 17 and I go to sixth form in my local town. I have autism, which means I talk to myself a lot, hence this narration. I am also terrible at getting out of bed.

(Cut to Joe walking to school. Narration continues.)

I am also very socially awkward. I’m (pause, followed by violent coughing while the Joe on the screen looks at the camera somewhat annoyed).

(We start the shot again).

JOE (narrator): I am also very socially awkward. I’m the most uncool kid in my school.

(Joe looks at the camera again).

JOE: Wait, why am I the uncool kid again?

JOE (narrator): Um, we pooed our pants in year 4?

JOE: Wait, how are we doing this right now?

JOE (narrator): Oh god he knows! (Sentence is cut off before its finished).

Cut to the school. He is walking in the sixth form centre.

JOE (narrator): I have very few friends. I’ll show you.

Cut to his friend SIMON (an internet obsessed nerd), who is sitting on a chair playing on his lap top.

JOE (narrator): This is Simon. If there is anyone less cool than me, he probably doesn’t exist, but he comes close! He pretends he’s some meme god when really he’s that smart kid that can really be doing other things than making dated internet jokes.

Simon looks at the camera awkwardly.

SIMON: Uh, yeah boyyyyy?

JOE (narrator): Shut up!

Simon shuts up and goes back to his computer obediently.

Cut to ERIN (an emo punk girl wearing heavy makeup) is on her phone. Not looking at the camera.

JOE (narrator): Avril Levine over here is also my friend. Her real name is Erin. I don’t think her and Simon get on. Despite her hating everyone and everything, we are very good friends. (Erin looks up at the camera, rolls her eyes and goes back to her phone). Probably because we went to playgroup together.

Cut to the two sitting on the floor in a playgroup. They are still the same age. Erin is on the phone and Joe looks confused.

JOE: Wait, did this even happen?

Cut before the sentence finishes. Joe is walking up the stairs, staring angrily at EUGENE (Joe’s nemesis despite them being the same person), he is walking in his direction. They meet.

JOE (narrator): Not everyone is nice though. There is no one I hate more than Eugene!

JOE: Nice to see you again spaz!

EUGENE: The pleasures all mine, ass burgers!

JOE: How’s your Runescape account coming along? Not good enough for Warcraft?

EUGENE: Still playing with your sonic toys?

JOE: Your mum’s so fat when she fell down the stairs I thought eastenders was on!

EUGENE: Your mum’s so stupid she gave birth to you!

They walk off in separate directions to where they were originally going to, only to go back on their original routes a few seconds later, hitting eachother’s shoulders.

Cut to Eugene going to his group of friends. He too has an emo friend (GRETCHEN) and a meme obsessed friend (JOSH).

JOE (narrator): I hate him! We are complete polar opposites!

EUGENE: Hey guys.

GRETCHEN: Eh.

JOSH: WHAT ARE THOSE!!! (Cut before his sentence is finished).

Cut to Joe going into a room and seeing his crush EVANGELINE.

JOE (narrator): I totally forget about Eugene whenever I see Evangeline. She’s so….wow!

Joe and Evangeline lock eyes. But after a long awkward pause she goes back to school work. Joe leaves still shell shocked by her beauty.

JOE (narrator): Yeah she totally digs me.

Cut to Joe alone in a field waiting for his friends to show up.

JOE (narrator): Oh, well I may have no social life, no dignity or no Evangeline. But at least I have my friends. (Pause). I said at least I have my friends! (Cut before he can finish his sentence).

Erin and Simon appear out of thin air. Both not interested and doing other things.

JOE (narrator): There we go! My squad. I wouldn’t be anything without them.

Long pause as they eventually leave Joe alone (going off in separate directions). Joe looks to the camera, shrugs as the title appears. “JOE: or the greatest loser in all of longsands academy”. The shot lingers as Joe looks confused.

JOE: That’s the opening right? (Pause). Hello? Hellooooo? (runs off screen). Hey guys wait up!

My audience

MY AUDIENCE AND HOW MY PRODUCT WOULD APPEAL TO THEM.
THE AGE OF MY AUDIENCE WOULD BE OLDER TEENAGERS/YOUNG ADULTS, BETWEEN 15 AND 18. THE LOCATION OF MY AUDIENCE WOULD MAINLY BE COLLEGE/HIGH SCHOOL/SIXTH FORM. MY AUDIENCE WOULD BE GENDER NEUTRAL.THE AUDIENCE'S INCOME LEVEL WOULD BE VERY SEMI-SKILLED. THIS IS BECAUSE MY MOVIE NEEDS TO SEEM RELATABLE, SO I WILL APPEAL TO AN AUDIENCE OF PEOPLE WHO AREN'T THE BEST AT EVERYTHING. WITH THIS IN MIND THE EDUCATION LEVEL WILL BE AVERAGE. THE FAMILY STATUS OF OUR AUDIENCE WOULD BE VARIED, BOTH FUNCTIONAL AND BROKEN. THIS IS AGAIN TO MAKE A GENUINE CONNECTION AND GAIN MORE VIEWERS WHEN ANYONE OF THAT AGE CAN SEE IT. TO ALSO ADD TO THE GENUINENESS OF THE AUDIENCE, THEIR OCCUPATION WOULD MAINLY BE EITHER UNEMPLOYED OR THAT OF A SMALL PART TIME JOB (SUPERMARKET, CHIPPY, SMALL SHOP).THERE WOULD BE NO SPECIFIC ETHNIC BACKGROUND, THIS ALLOWS MANY VARIED AUDIENCES TO COME IN, WHICH INCREASES SALES OF THE PRODUCT. THE AUDIENCE'S PERSONALITY WOULD MAINLY BE THE CREATIVE TYPE, AS WE CAN BE EXCITING AND NEW WHILE STILL APPEALING TO A MASS DEMOGRAPHIC. THE ATTITUDES OF THIS AUDIENCE MAY BE SHY, BUT THAT'S SO WE CAN MOTIVATE OR ENCOURAGE THEM TO BE STRONGER VIA THE PRODUCT, AND ALSO SO WE DON'T MARKET TO A STEREOTYPE OF FEARLESS PEOPLE THAT DON'T EXIST IN THE REAL WORLD. THE VALUES WILL BE MOVIES MAINLY, AS THIS IS A MOVIE, BUT OTHER VALUES WILL BE MUSIC AND ART. THIS CAN ALLOW US TO CREATE OUT THERE CHARACTERS AND HAVE A POP SOUNDTRACK, WHICH WILL ALSO RANK IN THE NUMBERS. INTERESTS AND HOBBIES WOULD BE THAT OF THE VALUES, MAINLY TO DO WITH FILMS, BE IT FILM MAKING, OR LISTENING TO MUSIC OR ARTISTIC ACTIVITIES. WITH THESE HOBBIES AWARE TO ME I'D KNOW HOW TO MARKET MY MOVIE TO APPEAL TO PEOPLE WITH THESE KIND OF HOBBIES. THE LIFESTYLE OF THIS AUDIENCE WOULD BE QUITE NORMAL, SEEING HOW WE WANT TO RELATE TO NORMAL TEENAGERS WE DON'T WANT TO ALIENATE THEM TOO MUCH. AND THE BEHAVIOUR WOULD PROBABLY BE EITHER QUITE NORMAL, AGAIN PLAYING INTO THE GENUINE RELATABILITY OF THE PRODUCT, OR QUITE AWKWARD SO WE CAN RELATE TO OR DRAW IN THE UNPOPULAR, SOCIALLY AWKWARD TEENAGERS WHICH ARE A LOT MORE COMMON THAN THE STEREOTYPICAL POPULAR JOCK/VALLEY GIRL STEREOTYPES WE SEE EVERYWHERE. THERE ARE ENOUGH PEOPLE TO FIT MY CRITERIA. THEY CAN RELATE TO THE CHARACTERS AND SITUATION AND BUY IT MORE. THE APPEAL TO THE AUDIENCE IS WHAT DRIVES THEM TO BUY MY PRODUCT. THEY COULD AFFORD MY PRODUCT. I CAN REACH OUT TO THEM WITH MY MESSAGE ABOUT BEING YOURSELF AND BE ORIGINAL. IT IS EASILY ACCESSABLE. IF THEY HAVE THE TYPICAL NORMAL LIFESTYLE THEYD WATCH A MOVIE FROM TIME TO TIME, THIS MEANS THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE OF THEM WATCHING MY MOVIE. THEY WILL WATCH THE MOVIE IN THEIR SPARE TIME OR ON WEEKENDS/FILM NIGHTS. THE CHARACTERS AND SETTINGS ARE MOST APPEALING TO THEM. THEY WILL TURN TO TV GUIDES AND/OR SOCIAL MEDIA FOR INFORMATION.

Editing excercise

https://youtu.be/05Eb0NTj4MQ MY EDITING EXCERCISE!

THIS FILM IS TO PRACTISE MY EDITING SKILLS. FROM IT, I LEARNED TO USE THE 180 RULE, MATCH ON ACTION AND SHOT REVERSE SHOT TECHNIQUES. I ALSO USED A TRANSITION IN ORDER TO MAKE IT LOOK LIKE THE TWO CHARACTERS HAVE TALKED FOR A LONG TIME, LONGER THAN WE FILMED. I'M NOT HAPPY WITH THE CINEMATOGRAPHY, ONE OR TWO OF THE SHOTS ARE WONKY, BUT THIS TASK WAS ABOUT PRACTISING MY EDITING SKILLS, AND FOR MY FIRST ATTEMPT AT USING EDITING SOFTWARE, I THINK I HAVE DONE ALRIGHT. ALL I KNOW IS THAT MY WORK IS ONLY GOING TO GET BETTER :)

The common tropes of a teen movie

MEDIA TRANSITION TIMELINE:

FOOTLOOSE-1984-Director:Herbert Ross
Tropes: moving away, everyone is boring cliché, the main character is an outcast, new friends made, evil father, high school, pop soundtrack.

TEEN WOLF-1985-Director:Rod Daniel
Tropes: main character is an outcast trying to fit in with the cool kids, bullies, love interest who's not interested at first but is eventually won over, sport team, a being yourself message, alcohol, high school, pop soundtrack.

CLUELESS-1995-Director: Amy Heckerling
Tropes: main character is at the top of her game and then spirals downwards where she eventually learns her lesson, unpopular best friend who is given a makeover, ignored friend who was right all along, romance, fashion, high school.

MEAN GIRLS-2004-Director: Mark Waters
Tropes: main character is an outcast, new best friends, fashion, pop music, message of being kind and not being shallow or vapid, high school.

EASY A-2010-Director: Will Gluck:
Tropes: main character is unpopular so lies to spice things up, best friend, busy body, misunderstanding and unwanted attention ensues, truth is revealed at the end, high school.

CONCLUSION:
Teen films usually have a main character who is unpopular, or a character who is popular but for whatever reason becomes unpopular. This is most likely so the teen audience can relate with them. There are usually bullies, as well as a best friend (they're either more unpopular than our hero or are the cool kid). The setting is usually a high school, so again the teen audience can relate. There are usually themes of fashion if they are appealing to girls, in contrast there are sporty themes for the boys. Usually (for the boys but sometimes for the girls) the main character gets the girl/guy who wasn't into them at the start of the movie. There is usually a pop soundtrack filled with music that was popular at the time of the movie's inception. This is probably to sell more merchandise like CD's or songs. And finally there is usually an important message at the end which ties in with and affect's the protagonist's ark, for example: the main character becomes really popular and shallow, learns the errors of their ways and becomes wiser at the end of the movie.

Eastenders analysis

My study of the elderly representation in Eastenders.

LIGHTING:
The lighting is very dim, which hints at the idea of an old man's life source flickering. however it isn't dark, you can still see every detail of their face to show how old they are.

CINEMATOGRAPHY:
The camera shots mainly consist of either high angle shots to make them seem vulnerable, low angle shots to show their wisdom or experience on earth (as if the years they have lived are shown in height) or medium shots, as if to say the only important part of the old man physically is his face, because depending on their clothes, that's how you tell someone by age.

EDITING:
The editing is rather slow and relaxed, matching the personality of an old person. it also lets the shots play out to give time to show their ageing.

MISE EN SCENE:
The elderly person usually wears brown, green, grey clothes that look rough and old if they're a man, if they're a woman they'll wear colourful dresses as an attempt to hold on to their youth.

SOUND:
Usually there is a lack of music to let their old voices sink in. If they are listening to music they listen to classical music or music from the 50s.
